ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे चक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि तन्नो नन्दिः प्रचोदयात् ||
Om Tatpurushay Vidmahe Chakratunday Dheemahi Tanno Nandih Prachodayat

Meaning: Om. Let me meditate on that great living being, Oh, Lord of devas, give me higher intellect, And let the God Nandi illuminate my mind.

Ananda Nandi is Lord Shiva’s best friend and assistant, according to Hindu scriptures. He is the chief devotee of Lord Shiva, and He is enshrined in the form of a bull, in front of Lord Shiva in all Shiva temples. Lord Shiva rides Nandi and Lord Nandi is very dear to Lord Shiva.

According to the Puranas, there should not be any disturbance in the penance of Lord Shiva; hence Nandi is stationed outside his tapasya in Chaitanya state. Whatever devotees bring their problems to Lord Shiva, Nandi stops them there.

Devotees speak in the ear of Nandi and when Shiva comes out of penance, Nandi tells him all the things of the devotees as they are. Nandi does not discriminate in bringing his word to Lord Shiva and, therefore Shiva also accepts his words.
